Friday, September 18, 2009Umbrella!Last night I wholeheartedly enjoyed Umbrella!, a benefit and silent art auction for Forecast Public Art at Union Depot in St. Paul. Twin Cities Fine Arts Organization was a supporting sponsor. What a night! There was fun to be had at every turn. Pendulum Painting with Willis Bowman was a mesmerizing scene. Then there was the interactive video with Cinema de la Vie, Art Vending Machine from Altered Aesthetics and Light Projections (seen above on the building exterior) by Ali Momeni and Andrea Steudel. Then of course there were the auctions. Live and silent, neither quiet. The crowd couldn't get enough of the more than 60 artist-designed original works on umbrellas. Umbrellas make such interesting canvases. My favorite piece was by children's book author and illustrator Nancy Carlson, seen hanging in the center of the image below. A beautiful site--red balloons holding up a single white umbrella upside down. If you could pop a cork from a dry-ice-filled bottle into the umbrella, you won a free T-shirt! This event had fun at every turn. I can't wait for the third annual Umbrella! next year. Seen Around Town![]() Marcia Haffmans work is on display in a number of places around town. It is also featured in the exhibit BEYOND THE SURFACE - Paintings by Marcia Haffmans at the OWATONNA ARTS CENTER. Perhaps you have a fall colors tour planned for later this month? It is one of those "have-to" points-of-interest in Minnesota for its beautiful architecture and interior. 435 Garden View Lane Owatonna, MN 55060 507.451.0533 Thursday, September 10, 2009Tonight at Nina Bliese GalleryContextural Matters: Found objects and fiber work by Ingrid Restemayer ![]() Merry go round, 2009, Ingrid Restemayer Opening Reception: September 10, 5 to 8 p.m. Artist Talk at 6:45 Ingride Restemayer uses embroidery and found objects to create interesting references to our consumerism. I love the idea of the stiches gripping objects that would often be discarded. As stated in the gallery release, "An upbringing in midwest, middle-class American consumer culture has given Restemayer an uncommon appreciation for the beauty in simple, common objects. Being a recycler and habitual pack-rat for most of her life makes it unnecessary for Restemayer to look any further than the kitchen junk drawer or in the back of an office cabinet to find an inspiring object." The show runs through October 30. --- Street parking available or in 225 South Sixth Street parking ramp for $5.00 with gallery coupon (Ramp entrance on South 7th Street and 3rd Avenue South) Wednesday, September 9, 2009Mississippi Mermaids Emerge
