Must See Art: Sabes JCC Tychman Shapiro Gallery

Where to go:
Tychman Shapiro Gallery Sabes Jewish Community Center (Map)
4330 S. Cedar Lake Road, Minneapolis, MN 55416

What to do:
1. “Finnish and Jewish: Photographs by Dina Kantor,” July 14–September 22
Minneapolis native Dina Kantor began photographing members of the small Jewish community in Finland in 2006, documenting how Finnish Jews live, work and practice their religious traditions in today’s increasingly complex and multi-cultural society. A reception will be held Thursday, July 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. with an artist talk at 7 p.m.

2. See the Saana Ensemble Concert on Sunday, August 7 at 7 p.m.
Saana Ensemble is a vocal group made up of five native Finns who now live in the Twin Cities and perform Finnish music, sometimes with percussion and other instruments. Reception and gallery tour to follow.

3. Check out “The Love of the Rose” sculpture in the Sabes JCC lobby
The lobby has come alive with colored reflections of light on the ceiling and walls since the sculpture by Alexander Tylevich was installed. The sculpture is installed above the entrance to the Tychman Shapiro Gallery on the first floor. Viewing it from both the lobby level and the upstairs balcony is a must: this is a two-level viewing experience.

Must-see piece right now:
“Edi Takolander, Hanko,” 2007 by Dina Kantor (pictured above)

While you’re in the area:
Head over to the Shops at West end for food and shopping. Crave, Rojo, and Cooper’s Irish Pub are all top contenders for lunch or happy hour.
