Gordon Parks Work Still Causing A Sensation

Gordon Parks is certainly a person of note in the arts scene during the last half of the 20th Century. We're glad that his work is getting another look, a look by millions, in an upcoming New York City exhibition. Read more about it at the New York Times.

Gordon told a great story about his first foray into photography. One that took place right here in the Twin Cities on behalf of a local fashion retailer. It was a confluence of factors that worked to break him onto the scene, one that has certainly benefitted from his work.

McKnight Artist Fellowships for Visual Artists

The 2012/13 McKnight Visual Arts Fellowship application site is now open! Visit the application website for more information about the application process and to submit materials. The deadline for submission is Friday, April 6th at noon.

The McKnight Foundation’s Arts program is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the country. Established in 1981, the McKnight Artist Fellowships provide annual, unrestricted cash awards to outstanding mid-career Minnesota artists in 12 areas. The Arts program supports the conviction that the arts cannot flourish or enhance community life without the ideas, energy, and drive of individual artists, and that artists cannot make these contributions without unfettered creative time.

Call for Artists: The Soap Factory

The Soap Factory is looking for artists to exhibit during their 2013 season. Group exhibitions curated from submissions could include up to 8 artists. Of particular interest are proposals created specifically for The Soap Factory galleries. Projects that use the entire 12,000 square feet of gallery space are encouraged but not mandatory.

Because the galleries are located in a 120-year-old industrial warehouse, there is no climate control, air conditioning or permanent heating system. Please keep this in mind when choosing work to submit.

Proposals must be received by mail (NO email submission will be accepted) before April 30, 2012. For more information on submission guidelines, go to www.soapfactory.org/submissions.php.

The Arts Social Club was created to fill a need for informal networking events that would bring together a wide variety of people in the creative fields. The talk will focus on the unique life of Gordon Parks as recorded in his autobiography To Smile In Autumn. Parks traveled the globe during his lifetime and interacted with world leaders and celebrities, making his story unlike that of any black artist who preceded him.

BTAC Accepting Exhibition Proposals

Support Savage Art Studios

Savage Art Studios has recently experienced financial strain with the current economic climate. Due to this stress, director Jo Storey has been forced to notify the City of Savage that the organization will need to restructure or vacate their lease by spring.

Storey reports that the City and the Savage Arts Council have responded positively. Says Storey, “It is not a case of ‘going out of business’ but rather a case of hoping to find a long-term plan for a permanent arts community or center in Savage.”

The Savage City Council will discuss recommendations during their meeting on February 13th. Members of Savage Arts Council will be in attendance. If you would like to have input in the process and support Savage Art Studio, please attend.

Grab your coat and head to the lake tomorrow, January 14th, for the opening weekend of Art Shanty Projects 2012. This four week exhibition is part sculpture park, part artist residency and part social experiment which adds up to arguably the best way for art lovers to embrace the winter weather.

This year’s shanty offerings include such projects as Robot Reprise, Sashay Shantay, Monsters Under The Bed Shanty, Solar Ark Shanty and Dance Shanty among others. Don’t miss your chance to get a peek at all of them!

Call for Artists: Community Supported Art

CSA returns for a fourth season of locally produced and supported art. Employing the same model as Community Supported Agriculture, Community Supported Art supports local art, artists and collectors. Artists, who are selected by a jury, will be given a stipend to create 50 “shares” for the program by a set deadline. Shares can be purchased by the public for $300. Shareholders receive one box containing three works at three different pickup dates throughout the spring/summer season.

Minnesota artists of all disciplines are invited to submit proposals now through January 18th, 2012. Not all art comes in the form of a physical object. Along with visual artists, the CSA program encourages musicians, performing artists and writers to apply. Proposals must include samples of your current work, an artist’s statement and a one page artist’s resume.

An informational session about the CSA program will be held Thursday, December 22nd at 6 p.m. in the East Lake Library conference room (map). For more information, check out the CSA Call for Artists online.

Message from Minnesota Citizens for the Arts: Help Oppose Legacy Stadium Funding Today!

Come to the capitol today on your lunch hour to oppose using Legacy money for a new stadium.

We want to make sure legislators know that the majority of Minnesotans oppose using Legacy funds for a stadium. Join us at the Capitol over your lunch hour for just an hour or so, from 12:00-1:00. Join us outside Room 15 (on the Ground floor) at the State Capitol on Tuesday, Dec. 6 to ask legislators not to use Arts Legacy funds for a Vikings Stadium. The Senate has scheduled a hearing for 12:30 on that day. We will have signs and buttons for you to wear, although you can make your own signs! Look for arts friends wearing "Arts Advocate" buttons. We need you there!

Our message? "Not One Penny of Legacy for a Stadium!"

Message from Minnesota Citizens for the Arts

Yesterday's Minneapolis Star Tribune held some great news for arts advocates:

"The idea floated recently of using Legacy funds, which are dedicated to projects benefiting the environment, arts and cultural heritage, was shot down by the poll respondents -- 77 percent opposed using Legacy funds for a stadium, compared to 21 percent in favor."

This news comes after a chaotic week in which the momentum to hold a special session to fund the stadium came to a screeching halt when Speaker Kurt Zellers said that the House would prefer to deal with the stadium during the upcoming regular session. Gov. Dayton declared that he would not, therefore, as previously planned, come out with a stadium proposal today after all. It is clear that there is no agreement on how to pay for the stadium, which is why crazy ideas like using Legacy funds are being tossed around. At the moment, using upgraded electronic pull tabs as the main funding source seems to have the most legs, but things remain fluid and could drag on for some time.

The other good news is that you arts advocates have now delivered over 14,500 messages to your elected officials in opposition of using Legacy funds for the stadium. Some of this response has come from our friends at Conservation Minnesota and the Minnesota Environmental Partnership, who put out alerts to their members to oppose the move to use Legacy funds because it would set a bad precedent for misuse of the land, water, and parks funds. It's great to see our coalition from the campaign in 2008 still working together for the good of all.

While the Legacy idea seems to have lost some steam due in part to your overwhelming response, it will not go away entirely until a funding package for the stadium is put together, or until it is clear that the team doesn't have legislative support to build one at all. We will remain vigilant until this is resolved, as it may come back to life. If you haven't had a chance to voice your opposition, it's not too late. You can send letters to the Governor and legislature here.

The FAIR School Crystal is looking for artists to show at their Crafty Pancakes 2011 event on Saturday, December 3rd from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is an arts and crafts fair to benefit the school. Artists must be 18 or older and all art must be appropriate for viewers of all ages. Artists with small items to offer (i.e. wearable art and jewelry, textiles, ceramics, ornaments, prints, etc.) are especially encouraged to participate. The exhibition fee is $25 and 20% of all sales are donated to FAIR Crystal PTO. Artists should carry their own insurance and are responsible for watching and selling their art during the event.

Head over to University of St. Thomas for Remembrance of Past Things: Memory, Mourning and Ritual, an exhibition that opens this week and runs through Jan. 26th, 2012.

The show features items of primarily local origins that create remembrance and assure that an idea, event or person is “gone but not forgotten.” Included are photographs of memorials and the people they honor, clothing, accessories and other ephemera of mourning.

Dr. Steven Nelson will present the lecture “Mary Magdalene Campos-Pons: Memory is Feminine” in conjunction with the exhibit on Thursday, Nov. 17th at 6 p.m. in the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium with a reception afterwards.

Don’t miss Iron Maidens which debuts its US tour now at the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery at St. Catherine University. The show features women artists from Wales, England and America who work in iron casting.

Iron casting has a long history of use for the production of functional items but developed as an art form in the 1960s with the introduction of studio sized equipment. The practice has now gained popularity world-wide. The exhibition celebrates the unique contribution of women to the medium.
